Winter 2026 Newsletter

I am growing to love the stillness of winter;

the cold sun hugging the horizon,

a bright and distant star.

The trees dream their slow dreams

passing whispers through root and fungal thread

while I count what remains of the harvest.

Another year etched in the bone.

The silence asks nothing, gives nothing

and I hold memories cupped in my hands like flames.

How To Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell

As a chronic over-subscriber who constantly flirts with overwhelm and burnout, the past few years have been an exercise for me in being more discerning with what I choose to do and giving myself periods of rest.  I picked up How To Do Nothing expecting that it would help me learn to be comfortable with, as the title implies, doing nothing.  It turns out that doing nothing looks a lot like doing something to Odell.

The central premise of the book is to be intentional with where we place our attention.  To ‘do nothing’, says Odell, involves two pieces. “The first half of “doing nothing” is about disengaging from the attention economy; the other half is about reengaging with something else” (pg xxviii). For this second half, she points to bioregionalism, which asks us to identify as citizens of our bioregions and act as stewards of the local ecology. Deliberately removing our attention and energy from the corporate machine and redirecting to a slower, more intentional engagement with the living world around us echoes many of the sentiments expressed by the druid community, and I found it interesting to hear it expounded upon from a different perspective.
